Mas Martinet Clos DOQ Priorat ’17
Clos Martinet is made from grapes which every year come from the plots that belong to our Mas d’en Martinet vineyard situated on the lands that form Gratallops village wines. The slate soil and different exposition of the sloping vineyards grant the wine its own character year after year. The vineyards in greater part consist of the local varieties: red grenache, carignan and downy grenache as we are convinced that these varietals express the character of Priorat the best. However, we also maintain syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon as homage to the great pioneers like Josep Lluís Pérez. Over the years we have been adding more and more local varieties, we work with indigenous yeast slowly abandoning the ideas that motivated us at the beginning, the technical knowledge of the grapes and wine, in favor of a dialogue with nature to be able to express the Clos Martinet vineyard.
Vintage 2017: After a winter with a small amount of water and higher average temperatures than the previous year, rains in March cooled off and facilitated the spring break, although it was not very generous. Summer was dry. As temperatures are concerned, June was extremely hot, July behaved itself and August was normal. To sum up, entire maturation process advanced and the Martinet team needed to harvest a little bit earlier than usual, at the end of August. A ripe vintage, sweet and more drinkable tannins, and friendly wines.
Vinification and Aging: 2017 Clos Martinet was made with minimum intervention, as usual in our winemaking practices. Grapes macerate in concrete tanks between 15 and 30 days without stems. After the alcoholic fermentation, we bleed and press skins in a small low-performance vertical press. Presses, aged apart, also belong to this Clos Martinet. The aging is done in different materials: concrete, amphora, demijohns, barrels of 300 liters and Austrian oak barrels of 2000 liters, all of them taking a role in the wine’s complexity during 17 months of aging. Martinet bottled Clos Martinet 2017 in February 2019.
Winemaker Notes: Clos Martinet 2017 is a forward and elegant wine with an attractive and fruity nose. Full-bodied, smooth palate of deep rounded flavors, nice noticeable minerality with ripe fruit and spicy notes. Excellent length.
About the Winery
Mas Martinet is the mother project of all the other family projects. Created in 1986, alongside other adventurers who started working on the “Clos” wines idea in Priorat, it has been the central axis for the Pérez family and has involved every family member to date. Mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, cousins, uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews… everyone worked on planting the vines, working them, building the winery and worked in the winery, bottling the wines, labelled them, travelled to sell the first vintages and all the other jobs that were needed to be done at the beginning.
Since 2001, Sara Pérez has been in charge and all wines made at Mas Martinet have been certified as organically produced since the 2006 vintage.
