Maruxa Godello Valdeorras ’19
Winemaker Notes
Winemaking: Grapes used for Maruxa Godello are a selection from our vineyards in the village of Entoma, Regueiron, Valdemioto and O Serro. Soils in these high altitude vineyards with a 30% of inclination are mostly slate. Manual harvest in cases of 15 kgs to preserve the integrity of the grape. Once the grape arrives at the winery, they’re cooled to avoid oxidation. Alcoholic fermentation takes places at controlled temperatures to ensure the wine preserves varietal aromas.
In 2019 the Godello harvest took place during a dry summer which provided full grape maturity and a fresh, aromatic harvest. Yields have been lower due to rains during the bloom. It could be one of the best harvests of the last 10 years.
Tasting notes: Bright yellow straw color. On the nose, intense and varietal, reminisces of mature white fruit and very mineral. Balanced, silky, fresh and persistent on the palate. Recommended service temperature 10ºC.
About the Winery
The winery, The Virgen del Galir was founded in 2002 in a valley of the Galir river, in Éntoma, a small village in Orense, Galicia, Northern Spain. The “Camino de Santiago” crosses through this village.Maruxa, or Mary in English, is a Great Galician Name. She was the winery founders’ mother.
Virgen del Galir is a member of the Valdeorras DO. This semi-forgotten region has extraordinary vineyards producing unique wines that the world seldom gets a chance to experience.
Virgen del Galir owns 20 hectares of vineyards on practically as many plots, on a valley of the Galir river. Altitude is over 600m.
The ground is made up almost entirely of decomposed schist on terraces.
