2016 CHATEAU MAURAC HAUT MEDOC 12/750ML

Winemaker Notes

Aromas of dark fruits – cassis, blackberries, plums – are followed by an elegant concentration. Its ripe fruit flavors are complemented by notes of licorice and a hint of leather on the nose, its supple, velvety texture is supported by a fine tannic structure, a pure expression of Bordeaux breed and finesse.
Production included hand harvesting followed by a natural yeast fermentation in neutral tank. Aging is in 40% new barrique for 12 months.

About the Winery

When the chateau was established is undocumented, however it has been recognized as Cru Bourgeois since as early as 1886.

Winemaker and vineyard manager Claude Gaudin works with a number of châteaux in the Haut Medoc region, and one of the best is Château Maurac. This beautiful estate is situated just past the boundary of St. Estèphe, near such well-known neighbors as Château Sociando-Mallet and Château Charmail. The soil is mainly clay with some limestone, hence Merlot plays an important role in the property’s planting.

Gaudin’s philosophy is simple: the wine is made in the vineyard. Dense planting of the vines naturally reduces the yield per vine, resulting in a more concentrated wine. Green harvest during the summer further limits the yield. Traditional vinification and aging with just the right touch of new oak give structure and extra dimensions of flavor and complexity to the finished wine.
